Langosch am Main – Trendy place with Hessian Tapas

This was a surprisingly cool find. Langosch am Main is located at the end of Fahrgasse, where the Alte Brücke starts crossing the Main and a small square, the Fischerplätzchen, is situated as an entrance to the Frankfurt Altstadt. Despite being cut by major traffic arteries, this square feels surprisingly comfortable to linger, rest and have a bite. This might be the reason why a multitude of restaurants and cafés opened up shop around this square. Most of them seem exceedingly popular and it is notoriously difficult to find a seat in one of the trendy places during weekend evenings. By chance, we passed by during one Saturday lunch time and decided to check this place out. Luckily, it was not a problem to get a table during this time of the day.

From outside, Langosch did not overly strike me as a nice place, yet I immediately changed my mind after entering. The interior design is quite hip and trendy, but still tasteful. The style is going in the industrial charm direction without trying too hard. One wall was completely covered with wooden panels and the chic hardwood tables with nice flower decorations drew my attention. We were greeted friendly and the service was very attentive throughout. When looking at the menu, I was also positively surprised by the options available. First, they serve breakfast until 4 pm. But we felt more like a proper lunch already and checked their main dishes. They have international cuisine like burgers and salads. But we were intrigued by the plate of Hessian Tapas they offered. That sounded interesting and inventive. The drink menu also showed some nice variety. I ordered a Büble beer that I found most appropriate to accompany my German Tapas plater (albeit not from Hessen).

Our Hessian Tapas arrived quickly and I found it extremely inventive and original. Not something I have seen so far. On the plate was an assortment of bits typical for the Frankfurt/Hessen region and its usually heavy cuisine. We got different sausages, cheeses, ham and other meats together with a pinch of mustard. The famous regional Frankfurt dishes of Ei mit Grüner Sauce (eggs in a green herbal sauce) and Handkäs (sour milk cheese) were also represented. It went surprisingly well as a Tapas assortment. Everything was very tasty, delicious cheese, great ham and salami. The Grüne Sauce was very well done and tasted fresh and was full of herbs. Overall, it was a great idea to come here and this one plate shared by two totally sufficed. I very much liked the inventive Hessian Tapas and the trendy design of Langosch am Main.

La Cevi – Modern approach to a Peruvian classic

This is possibly one of the most happening restaurants in Frankfurt offering one of the trendiest cuisines right now. Ceviche is the national signature dish from Peru. This is raw fish cured in citrus or lime juices. The acid of the juice changes the protein structure of the fish, therefore basically cooking it without heat. Ceviche got increasingly popular spreading from Latin America first to the US and recently expanding in Europe. Frankfurt saw a small wave of new Peruvian restaurants open recently. The one that got most attention is La Cevi, which is located right in the middle of the hip and popular foodie district of Nordend. I really wanted to check this one out and so my wife and I met some dear friends for dinner the other night.

As a Peruvian restaurant, La Cevi not only offers ceviche, but also other fish and meat based dishes. However, the first time I visit a Peruvian restaurant, I have to test two things: the ceviche and the pisco sour. I ordered the national cocktail from Peru and La Cevi absolutely delighted me with a wonderful tasty version of it. The pisco sour was so delicious that I ordered three of them in the course of the evening. Regarding the ceviche, we decided to order multiple starters and tapas to share in order to test the different variations on the menu.

When our main dishes arrived, I was right away impressed by the playful presentation. The fish was arranged with small pieces of vegetables in quite a pretty way. We got plates of mixed ceviche, squid and also cooked salmon, which was incredibly soft. Our various ceviche tapas in the end did not differ too much, which makes sense because the concept is always the same. A surprising twist, was the ceviche variation where the fish was cured in a maracuja juice. All seafood tasted very fresh and was super soft.

Overall, it is a great place for eating the Peruvian dish of ceviche in a modern and relaxed atmosphere. It is definitely an exciting and interesting cuisine that is presented at high standard by La Cevi. I would like to come back and taste more. Not to speak of the pisco sour, which probably alone would make me want to visit again.
